Threads App More DAU than X

Zuckerberg’s microblogging application is now more popular than former Twitter

Meta’s newest social media platform, the Threads app, has recently overtaken X (formerly known as Twitter) in terms of its daily active users in the United States.

The achievement was initially noted in December 2023

It was the Apptopia data intelligence firm that first observed that the Threads app had more daily active users (DAUs) than the X social media platform.

“Threads DAUs in the US passed X in December 2023 and it has not looked back,” said Apptopia vice president of research Thomas Grant.

Threads is now ranked as the third most popular free application available at the App Store for iOS device users.  X, on the other hand, is lagging far behind in 41st place.

The Threads app came on the scene as X started to face some large struggles

X has been having a hard time drawing new users, particularly as it has been associated with a spectrum of undesirable issues such as spam bots, hate speech, and even divisive opinions publicly shared by its owner, Elon Musk.  Moreover, despite Musk’s promises that those issues would be dealt with, they persist.

According to Sensor Tower market research firm data, by February, X had only 27 million active daily users.  This was a drop of 18 percent when compared to February 2023. That said, the Threads app experienced substantial growth during that same period of time, raising its daily active users by 55 percent since December, bringing their total to 28 million daily active users.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO at Meta, believes that its microblogging app will continue to grow.

“(Threads) continues to be on the trajectory that I hope to see,” he said at the end of last month during the Meta earnings call.  During that same call, he stated that the application had more than 150 million monthly active users, which was a substantial increase over February, when there were over 130 million monthly active users. In October 2023, that figure was about 100 million monthly active users, showing a rapid rise in popularity. X cannot say the same.
